Before You Build a Website, Ask Yourself These 7 Questions

question mark

Starting a website can feel overwhelming but it doesn’t have to be.

So many web designers make the process long and complicated, when there’s no need. Or people try to create one themselves using a template and it ends up looking like everyone else’s.

Before you go down a rabbit hole of fonts, colours, images, and design templates, ask yourself these seven questions. They’ll clarity your ideas quickly.

With my one-page website design offering, I’ve got you covered through this entire process so you’re not stuck doing this on your own.

1. Who do I want to help?

Be as specific as you can.

The clearer you are about your audience, the easier it is to write your website.

2. What problem do I solve?

People visit your website because they're looking for help.

Can they quickly understand how you can help them?

3. What do I want people to do next?

Every website should have a clear purpose.

Do you want people to:

  • Book a discovery call?

  • Complete a contact form?

  • Email you?

  • Make a donation?

Keep it simple - Choose one main action.

4. What can I leave out?

Trying to include everything usually makes a website harder to understand.

Focus on what's most important.

5. What do people ask me all the time?

Those questions belong on your website.

If you're answering the same emails every week, your website can do some of that work for you.

6. Why should someone choose me?

What makes you different?

It doesn't have to be revolutionary.

It might be your approach, your experience, your values or simply the way you work with people.

7. Does this sound like me?

The best websites sound like a real person.

Don't worry about using impressive language.

Clear, honest communication will always build more trust than buzzwords.

A little planning goes a long way

You don't need to have every answer before you build your website.

But spending time on these questions will help you create a website that's clearer, more useful and more effective. Don’t worry - I go through what you’ll need with a questionnaire that covers everything.

Need a hand getting started?

Helping people answer these questions is one of my favourite parts of the design process.

If you're ready to create a website that feels clear, professional and true to your work, I'd love to chat.
